Over the next few weeks, we’re taking you behind the scenes for a day in the life of our PAC team members. Scroll on to meet Adam Dyson, a Networks Operation Specialist, as he takes us behind-the-scenes to see what it’s like to work on the Initial Common Support Infrastructure (ICSI) team.
- In one sentence, explain the problem that you solve.
“I assist the Australian Defence Force in its effort to utilize tactical networks, resulting in a safe and secure networking environment.”
2. How did you come to be in this role?
“As a former Air Surveillance Operator, tactical networks were simply part of a wider capability catalogue. However, as I grew older, I started to understand the importance of the digital operational arena and just how important Tactical Data Links (TDL) are to the warfighter of this generation. As my career progressed, I found myself becoming more involved with TDLs and I have never looked back.”
3. Tell us a little about yourself. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
“I’m a typical guy who loves to relax and enjoy the time I have. That free time is usually spent with my daughter Payton, but I also like Star Wars; and will make the mistake of waking early each week to watch European football – despite it usually ending in disappointment.”
4. What are the five tasks that take up the bulk of your work days?
“The nature of the Initial Common Support Infrastructure (ICSI), from the operational and technical sense is huge, so each day brings its own unique challenges. These include Operational Support, Maintenance Support, Project Support, Design and Development as well as Testing and Evaluation.”
5. List three skills or traits you think someone has to have in order to be a perfect fit for the team:
“To integrate with the ICSI team, first and foremost you need to have a willingness to learn. Whether your background is operational or technical, you’ll need to approach this undertaking holistically and be ready for anything. A clear understanding of ADF requirements is also paramount! They will be your client and therefore you’ll need to put your best foot forward. Professionalism is one of PAC’s core values, and that’s certainly a quality we look for here on the ICSI team as well. Finally you’ve got to be able to enjoy yourself! If you can do that, you’ll fit right in.”
6. What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?
“I’m lucky enough to work for a family-orientated company in PAC. They’ve been there for me for the highs and the lows. The work itself is a huge part of why I love what I do, but in the end it’s the people that make all the difference.”
7. What’s a common misconception about the work that you do?
“That I’m an operator of Tactical Data Links. In a sense that’s a true statement, but the role is so much larger than that. We use TDLs and we fix TDLs, but we’re also looking to the future – to upgrade them as the warfighter’s requirements continue to evolve.”
8. If someone you knew was considering joining our team, what advice would you give them?
“Joining a new team is hard, believe me… I know. But if you decide to take the plunge, you won’t regret it. The team will be there, waiting to support you.”
